Chapter Eight: The Magic Spying Trio- And! A Secret Promise

You tossed and turned as you slept, unable to fall fully asleep because of the pain you were in. Now that you were alone, your body decided it was a good time to let you feel the full impact of the days' beatings. You cringed and moaned, your pitiful voice echoing down the eerily quiet hallway. Your stomach rumbled in response, pleading for food. You shut your eyes tight, hoping you could just fall asleep and not wake up until this whole ordeal was over. But you knew you wouldn't be able to. Whining, you let your mind wander to the dragons. Wang had told you they were planning on rescuing you, or at least, he had hinted at it. But when? If this was your treatment every day, you doubted you would be able to survive much longer. Your mind continued to wander, unable to focus on one thing for too long. Surely it's nearly midnight. It can't be much earlier...can it? You thought, hoping that maybe your body would just wear itself out by thinking. Eventually, you just shut your eyes and lay there until you drifted off into a worried sleep. The last thing you remembered thinking was something along the lines of "Please...just come help me...soon."
Little did you know that a certain trio was nearing the place that you were imprisoned in... the three of them going incognito.

(Short flashback)

"Are you ABSOLUTELY, ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT sure that (name) Is in the Fort of Blacksea?" Arthur questioned, needing a complete 'yes' from the Chinese dragon. Wang had claimed to see (Name) in a sort of vision, where she told him she was captured and held in said fort. Arthur of course had his doubts, seeing as Wang was the only one who received it. Wang nodded, "Shi. I am completely positive in what I saw. I even spoke with her. She told me that most people just call it The Kings' Fort, since the king resides there." Arthur looked up into the night sky, billions of stars freckling the dark navy heavens. Sighing, he shifted his emerald gaze to the rest of the dragons, who were all asleep except for Wang and himself. "I can't begin to imagine the treatment she must be receiving from those cruel dogs. I hope she's alright..." He trailed off, curling his tail around him as a chilly midnight breeze blew through the Valley. Wang let out a small hum, "I can't account for the choices of the men, but I know that (name) is stronger than you'd think. I have faith that she hasn't given away anything." Arthur dug his claws into the soft earthy ground, "At least, not yet." He added, a somber look on his face. They didn't speak for a few minutes, letting the sound of the wind in the grass and the soft snores coming from the others fill the silence. Arthur stood up, his movements silent and swift. "Wang, if anyone does wake up and wonder where I went, tell them I'm just out for a walk." Wangs' brown eyes glistened with disbelief, "You're not planning on going to the fort by yourself, are you? If the king lives there, it will be well fortified and prepared for any attack. A single dragon could hardly stand on it's own." He cautioned. Arthur smirked, "I'm not going to attack it, just...scope out the place...you know, figure out it's weak points and the such."

    "...But how?"
Arthur sighed, "...Did you really just ask that?"

(Present time)

Arthur made his way through the forest, his human body able to maneuver through the dense underbrush much more easily than his dragon body. He was close to the town now, and he could see the light from the torches and lamps from where he was. He had draped himself in a decent outfit, not too bright so he wouldn't attract attention. He had also put on a cape to help conceal him when he hid. He smirked as he reveled in how good his plan was, until he heard a twig snap.

He leaped to his feet, hiding behind a bush and putting the hood of his cape up. He saw two pairs of feet in front of him, and he stayed perfectly still and silent.

"Arthur, why are you hiding in a bush?" Came the voice of Lukas, who moved away the branches to reveal the Englishman. Arthur huffed, glaring at Lukas and Vladimir, "Why are you following me?" He asked sharply, keeping his voice down. Lukas shrugged, "Since we were supposed to go along with you tomorrow, we figured it was best to know the area as well." Vladimir nodded, "Yeah! We were following you the whole time, but if Lukas hand't stepped on a twig you would have never known it!" Lukas grunted, "It's dark, and we're in the forest. My eye sight is severely hindered as a person anyway." Vladimir giggled slightly, revealing his pointy fangs, "I get it. Not everyone can have heightened night vision like I do." Lukas crossed his arms, "Well, not everyone's both a vampire AND a dragon." He retorted, looking away and grunting softly. Vladimir grinned, and turned back to Arthur, "Anyway, what was your plan?" He asked. "My plan was to infiltrate the fort in secret, and find out where the best spots to launch the attack would be. Of course, now that you two are here, I may have to change it a bit. I guess we should split up, and enter at different points. That way we can...explore, I suppose, and cover more land quicker. You are wearing your hoods, so be sure to use them to avoid getting noticed." Vladimir and Lukas nodded, and silently, they made their way into the town, not really blending in as well as they would have if they had taken down their hoods, but they did a satisfactory job keeping out of the spotlight and reaching the fort unnoticed.

"Alright. Lukas, you will go in on the East side, closest to the sea, Vladimir, you will go in on the West side, closest to the forest. I will go in on the South side, on the opposite end of the fort. Make sure to not do anything that will draw attention. What I mean by that is; don't kill or knock out anyone. If they find a person injured or dead, they'll know something is up." The two nodded again, tired of hearing that same lecture so many times in less than an hour. When they were all ready, they turned to head to their assigned spots, their capes making a synchronized whoosh sound as they flared out behind them.

~Short time skip of them heading to their areas~
(Lukas' POV)

The only thing I could hear was the sound of the waves from the ocean as I made my way to the spot Arthur had directed me to go to. I wasn't really fond of how Arthur made himself the leader, but I put up with it because we weren't supposed to be here anyway. The salty tang of the seawater reminded me of home, and of fish (mainly mackerel). I ignored the urge to go fishing and continued my way around the fort until I noticed a spot in the wall that had lots of pieces missing, enough for me to climb up. I took a running leap at the wall and grabbed hold of a large brick that stuck out a little. Slowly scaling the wall, I kept alert for any sign of guards.

As I reached the top, I heard footsteps on the wall. I braced myself to cast a spell, hanging onto the wall with only one hand. The guard stood only a foot away from the edge, looking out into the ocean. I rolled my eyes at how dumb that was. It wasn't like a ship could sneak in anyway. As he turned around, I hefted myself onto the wall and hid behind a stack of boxes until he walked past again, staring out into the sea. He seemed to stand there for quite a while, and it was no surprise either; the moon was full, and the sky was cloudless. The sea was silver and shimmering. It was quite the sight. Focusing back onto my mission, I crept past him on light feet. I noted that the wall was not too wide, only about eight feet wide. A strong dragon such as Ivan or Berwald would have no problem breaking through that. Looking around, I noticed that the wall itself was pretty empty. Only a few men toting long-range guns on the corners were there. This'll definitely make it easier to go unnoticed. I thought as I continued forward, keeping low and quiet. I glanced down onto the ground level of the building, and I spotted the cape- turned silver from the moonlight- of Vladimir. He managed to get onto the ground level? How? I wondered as I watched him with curiosity.

He was half hidden by a cluster of cargo boxes, crouched down and looking around for any nearby enemies. What he didn't know was that there was a large brute coming up from behind him, and while the guard hadn't spotted him yet, he would in a few steps. I instinctively flicked out my hand, sending a short dart-like object flying at the guard. It hit him right in the neck, and after a few moments of standing still, the guard swayed a little bit, moaned, and finally collapsed. Vladimir heard the sound of his large body thumping onto the ground. He looked around nervously, and noticed me standing up on the wall. Giving me a smile and a thumbs-up, he dragged the knocked out guard to right beside him, making it appear that he had merely fallen asleep and was trying to avoid getting noticed. The Romanian quickly left his spot and moved to another one. I quickly went back to scoping out the fort, briefly wondering where Arthur had gotten to. Knowing the Brit, he was pushing his spying skills to the limit.

(Vlads' POV)

As I stealthily made my way over to my new hiding spot (a large bush, to be exact!) I noticed that there was a distinct lack of guards on the ground. In fact, there were barely any! Why? Is something going on? Shouldn't there be hundreds of guards here? I thought to myself as I made my way towards a large door. I heard voices inside, loud, drunk voices. Building my courage, I opened the door just a crack, and peered inside.

They were throwing a party! Music and singing flowed through my ears, and the bright light made me half hiss. I noticed that the men were all wearing similar outfits, and many of them were holding drinks. I opened the door a little and stepped inside, pulling my hood down and trying to fit in with the crowd. It wasn't hard; they were all "loaded to the gunwale" anyway (according to a man I passed by). I wove through the drunken crowd, slipping into a room that was much more quiet.

To my surprise, Arthur was in there, rummaging through a chest facing away from me. I snickered to myself as I snuck up on him. My muscles were tensed and ready to spring, and I used my most scary voice as I growled, "What are you doing in here? Intruder!" I laughed as he jumped about five feet off the ground. He realized it was me, and he gave me a horrible glare, "How dare you scare me like that, wanker!" He growled out, his green eyes blazing like his magic jade flame. I grinned, "Hey! I was just having a little fun. Besides, no one knows we're in here. Calm down a bit, Arthur." He sighed loudly, "I doubt everyone is drunk. I would rather NOT have our cover blown just because you thought it would be funny to play a prank on me." I just snickered again, "Ok, ok. I'll leave you alone." I turned and put my hand on the doorknob, "By the way, what were you looking for?" Arthur smirked and pulled out a map of the fort. "It's the ground plans for this place. It seems to go into great detail about the layers and rooms." His smile grew wider, "With this...we can make even BETTER plans that pertain to this specific fort." He seemed offended when I wasn't overjoyed by this. He rolled his eyes, "Come on, we've got all we need with this." He put the map in a pocket and motioned for me to follow him. We didn't leave the way I came. We actually left through a door that led us into a hallway. The moonlight shone through the arched windows, lighting up little patches of it. Arthur didn't say anything as we quickly made our way down the hallway, our shadows only revealing themselves in the moonlight.

We escaped through an opened window and headed back to the rendezvous point. Lukas wasn't there yet, but we assumed he would be appearing shortly. Arthur kept looking around impatiently, obviously in a hurry. He relaxed when we heard the sound of a swift pair of feet approaching. Lukas turned the corner and walked over to us, his face pretty blank and emotionless. "I wasn't able to find too much, only the width of the walls and a few vantage points." He began, looking at the both of us in anticipation. "That's alright, chap. I found something that will give us a MUCH larger advantage." He chuckled to himself contently, obviously quite proud of his achievement. Lukas' dark blue orbs flickered, "Hm? And what would that be?" He asked, his voice hiding his curiosity pretty successfully. I grinned, beating Arthur to the punch, "The plans to the fort! Great, right?" Arthur was furious, clutching the map tightly in his fists, "How dare you steal my thunder! I was going to impress him with a really dramatic and unneeded reveal, too! Hmph!" He seethed, grinding his teeth angrily. I laughed nervously, "Oh, sorry Arthur!" I apologized. The Englishmen sighed, his shoulders relaxing. "Whatever, let's just head back and figure out a better suited plan for this place." He sighed, turning around. Lukas and I followed along like shadows, not saying anything until we were deep into the forest, and even then that was just me apologizing for tripping Arthur on accident.

(After a long stroll, they arrived back at the Valley)
(3rd POV)

"Oh! You're back! Well done!" Wang greeted the trio as they trudged back into the main meeting spot. Everyone was still asleep, but the sun was just about to begin its ascent, meaning it was about dawn. The three of them were still people, seeing as dragons, even the smallest ones, couldn't hold a map without damaging it. It was quite a tiring journey, and each of them were half asleep. Vladimir couldn't stop yawning, mumbling about how vampires usually napped during the day and that his bed time was getting close. Lukas and Arthur were just sleep deprived, neither of them used to the constant human need for sleep. Arthur raised the fort plans high up for Wang to see, and he managed to smile tiredly. "We found the plans for the Kings Fort. See here," He pointed to a large open square surrounded by walls that represented the main outdoor area. "This here," he yawned, "Is where the most people travel through. They call it a courtyard." He yawned again, "There are many doors, none if which lead to the dungeons, though. This one *yawn* leads to the kings courtroom. This one leads to the *yawn* kitchens and mess hall. And this one...leads...to the...servants quarters." Arthur barely finished his sentence before dropping the map and falling to the ground, already in a deep slumber. Wang sighed, "Westerners."

Vladimir picked up the map, studying it with curious ruby red eyes, "Hmm, according to this, the door that leads to the prisons is on the outside wall of the courtyard. There seems to be another door there too, but that looks like it leads further into the castle." Wang nodded, narrowing his eyes to get a better look at the map. For the Chinese dragon, it was quite small and difficult to read, but for Vladimir and Lukas it was just the right size. After a few more minutes of studying the map, the three devised a plan that better fit the forts' defenses.
---
"Ok, so now that we don't need the map anymore, I think you can change back into dragons." Wang told the two. They both nodded and they took off most of their clothing (For later) and transformed, stretching their wings and blinking away the need for sleep. Vladimir picked up Arthur, sound asleep in his human form, and set him down somewhere out of the way. "Let him rest, he'll need lots of energy for later." Wang commented softly.
The Norwegian and Romanian shared a knowing glance, deciding to rest for a little while before they would head back to the fort, once again masked as normal people. Well, not exactly normal. The plan was for them to openly walk into the fort, impersonating the Duke of a nearby kingdom. Arthur was going to be the one who spoke, while Vladimir and Lukas followed behind and acted as body guards, at the same time, cutting down the guards so they could get the king by himself. After that, they would lock him in a small room and ambush the fort, using their magic to signal the others. The groups would hit in three waves; The ground crew coming first and knocking down the walls, then the normal dragons joining shortly after, with the agile dragons arriving last. It was a great plan, considering that the fort was pretty big and that there would be many soldiers working there. Vladimir curled up and yawned, closing his eyes and dozing off into a light nap. Lukas nodded quietly to Wang before joining him, his breathing slow and steady as he snoozed. Wang gazed out into the forest, hoping for luck in their mission one last time before finally getting some shut-eye.

(Time skip -back to you!- Early Morning)

    "Psst. (N-Name). Wake up."
You opened one eye to see Fyn standing at the cell door. You grumbled, "Leave me alone. I'm tired." You rolled over, facing the grimy wall. "Please (Name)? I have food."
At the mention of food, your eyes widened. You hadn't eaten in...what...three days? You sat up and looked at him with droopy but bright eyes. "Really?" You asked, flinching in pain as you got out of the bed and stumbled over to him. At this point, you were sore and bruised, but the sharp pain had subsided and you felt slightly better. The blond smiled and held out a small loaf of bread and some (fruit). This made you think back to the day your whole adventure began, at the market with (Friend). You shook your head, it seemed like a long time since you had talked to them. But that wasn't something to think of now. You snatched the food from him immediately, making him blink in surprise. You started wolfing down the bread, your teeth easily ripping through the still warm stuff. Fyn watched with both confusion and a sort of fear. You looked up at him, half of the bread already gone. Your (E/C) orbs were sharp and challenging as you eyed him, a scowl on your face. "What? Never seen a starving girl eat before?" You hissed through clenched teeth as you continued eating. Fyn looked away, "W-Well, I was just surprised, really. I never thought someone would ever be so hungry. When you work for the king, you're always well fed and taken care of. Even the poor people here have something on their plates at night." You stopped eating to glance back up at him again. "Well...reality sucks. Not everyone can prance around and pretend they actually have a chance against a true dragon when all they're really doing is sitting around on their bums doing nothing. Some of us actually have to work for food." Fyn seemed offended by your comment. In fact, he even looked angry. Very angry.

Clenching his fists, he gripped onto your cell door, "I've been training every day, running laps, practice-fighting with more weapons than you probably knew exist, pouring over every single account of dragon encounters, and you just say we're pretending in order to get food?! Well, I'll tell you something. I grew up as a farmer. I worked in the fields and around animals every day. I planted, watered, and harvested almost everything because my parents were too sick to get out of their beds. My only sibling went off to work as a merchant, and guess what? While he was traveling down a mountain with medicine for our parents, his caravan was attacked by a bloody dragon!" His voice was shrill and sharp, cutting you deep. You'd never really heard him speak in anything louder than a quiet indoor voice. He wasn't finished just yet. "Yes, a bloody dragon swooped down and lit the wagons on fire! He barely escaped with his life and many men were killed by severe burns! He had used his hard earned money to buy that medicine, and in one puff of fire, fwoosh! The only chance of our parents surviving, up in flames! When he returned home, he helped me with my chores so hopefully we could make some more money before it was too late. But you know what else happened? A few weeks later, I find out that three of our best cows were gone! Guess what happened?"

You opened your mouth to reply, but he didn't let you answer, "A dragon ate them! Yeah! Another bloody dragon! So me and my brother worked twice as hard to get the cattle to market. We managed to do that, but we still didn't have enough money. So we start growing more crops. Wheat, sugar cane, you name it! Well, we were just about to harvest our fields when a dragon attacked our town and started a fire! It burned some of our crops, and even though we were able to save most of it, it put us back far enough to where we were only a few shillings short! A FEW SHILLINGS! OUR PARENTS DIED BECAUSE OF THAT! BECAUSE OF A DRAGON!" A waterfall of tears rolled down his freckled cheeks, falling to the ground like raindrops. He whimpered through clenched teeth, shutting his eyes tightly. "S-So I came here, hoping that I could become strong enough to fight dragons so no one would have to go through that kind of pain like I did. I thought, m-maybe if I killed the dragons, I could save a kids' life...or maybe a whole family someday." He sighed, looking down at his shoes. Silence filled the air, making you feel horrible. You blinked, your eyes shifting from blank rudeness to tender concern in moments. You reached through the bars and put your hand on his shoulder, making him look up at you. "I-I'm sorry. I didn't know you had such a rough history with dragons." You almost breathed, the silence falling in the hallway once again.

Fyn didn't respond for a long while, standing there with your hand on his shoulder. He slowly released his grip on the door with one hand, instead holding yours with a soft touch. You blinked, wondering what he was going to do. Still not looking up at you, he murmured, "You are not a dragon trapped in a girls' body." You gasped, staring at him and tilting your head to the side a little.

"You're a girl trapped in the body of a dragon, aren't you?"
You were struck speechless. You didn't respond for minutes, standing there with the same stare until he finally looked back up at you, his watery blue eyes reminding you of the ocean, with it's powerful knowledge and mystery. Without thinking, you nodded. A small, warm smile crept onto his face, "I knew it. I knew that, despite your cold exterior, you had the beating heart of a person within you."
Fyn tightened his grip on your hand, moving his other one to hold it as well. You stood there for a few moments, just kind of staring at each other. "Fyn...can I ask a question...?" You finally asked. He nodded and you quietly cleared your throat, "If you hate dragons so much, why are you friends with me...? Why are you being so nice to me even though you have the best reason to hate me...?"
"It's because...well...because you aren't what I expected you to be. You're actually... a really nice person, a-and I know that you're only sharp and rude because you're probably scared...or...something like that. If Adon tries to hurt you again, I'll stop him."
"You will?"
"Yes. Because...I made a vow to protect people...and if I just let him beat you up...I wouldn't be sticking to my vow."

"Thank you Fyn. A-and if anyone tries to hurt you...I'll make sure to protect you too... ok?" You promised, putting your free hand on top of his as a gesture of your vow.
"Ok." Fyn replied simply, nodding once to recognize your vow.

That morning...A promise was made. It was a very sacred promise. At the time, the two thought little of its' significance. But as time wore on, they'd discover what their vows truly meant to each other.

"Fyn! Are you down here?" Came the voice of Adon. You growled and slipped back to your bed, hiding the leftover food under the light sheet so he wouldn't see it. Fyn sighed as he turned around to greet his mentor. "Y-Yes. I'm down here."
"Good. Wake up the dragon and bring her upstairs. I expect you in the courtyard in ten minutes! Hurry up!"
Fyn turned back to you slowly, a sad expression on his face. "I'm sorry for snapping earlier. I-I just couldn't take it anymore- I had to tell someone. Your comment about how 'easy' our life is just made me think about my parents a-...and I just felt so-"
"-No...it's fine. I should apologize for being so sharp with you." You interrupted. Fyn unlocked the jail cell, waiting until you quickly devoured the rest of the bread and (fruit) to open the door (Can't let food go to waste, can we?) for you. "Well, I guess we should be heading up, huh?" He asked lightly. You smiled and walked beside him, his strides slightly longer than yours. It was the first time you walked freely in the fort without binds or chains. It felt amazing. You felt ready to take on Adon and whatever he had planned for you, putting on your best angry/stubborn face as you turned the corner and walked out of the dungeon, spotting Adon and his crew right away.

"Ah, welcome, my dear dragon-girl." Adon greeted with a smirk. You hissed at him, putting up you invisible walls once again. Darius stared at you with the slightest hint of amusement, and Gothar was smirking like Adon. Something was obviously up, but what?

"Ready for your second day of fun?"
This chapter has lots of stuff going on. I'm surprised Reader-chan and Fyn could do something so serious so early Confused  I mean, when I wake up I just grumble and fall back asleep. I guess that's the difference between real life and anime/fanfiction.

ANYWAY. This chapter has lots of plot points (Or not) that I shall now list for you!
  • The Magic Trio infiltrate the Fort of Blacksea and find the floor plans!
  • We get to hear some Fyn backstory!
  • You guys make a promise while at the same time making it look like you two are in love! But really, you aren't! (Or are you?)..
  • It turns out that Adon was not finished hurting you yet!
  • AND! YOU GET FOOD! That is the most important part of the entire chapter!
I spent two days on this C: Not very long but hopefully long enough to satisfy you guys until chapter nine!
You guys do realize that I'm just kind of letting the characters drive the story, right? Half of this stuff wasn't even planned aha...ha...

Also, as a little side note; I've never read/watched anything with Romania in it, and I just wikied him and tried to work with what I had. I don't own any Hetalia manga/anime and just recently have I watched series 2-4. My apoligizes ^_^; so if he seems OOC, please forgive me. I have no money to buy stuff with and I haven't watched any Beautiful World yet!

Previous chapter (I figured out how to do that, yay ;u; )

Next chapter- dragon-foxx.deviantart.com/art…

Also, shout out to FullBusterMetalZoro1 who gave me some really great tips! I tried to incorporate your advice (But I don't think I did it enough :/ sorry) I really appreciated the constructive critisism!

Sorry this is so late, I was doing trivial stuff with my family.
But anyways; nice chapter, it's good you got so much incorporated in this amount of time, and the vows that Fyn made are intriguing, because everyone needs the conformist and non-conformist together so the non-confrontation can affect the conformist! Because that makes everything facisnating about human nature! Also, now I'm seeing Fyn looking and acting like Nitori from free only with different colored hair and eyes ..... XD Haha oh well.
Also, thanks for the shoutout, I saw on my feed today and I flipped shit with happiness; you legitimately made my day. Thank you for that!
Also, you did a fine job with Vlad, he's very much a tease and pretty flamboyant, like, a Tamaki flamboyant only toned down several pegs.
And gravitating back to the shoutout, you definitely had more figurative language and imagery, and I saw some onomonopia and such in there, and some similes and metaphors, but some personification would be magnificent love!
In addition, the imagery was nice this time, very easily visualized, and the dialogue was amusing and really set the mood for the reader. The way you described the hunger of the reader was very acknowledgable. Overall, I enjoyed this chapter very much. I can't wait for more!

This comment made me so happy ;w;

I'm glad I did a good job with Vlad, I haven't read any of the manga (because I haven't found it anywhere, I'll probably have to order it online) which I'm pretty sure is where you get to see a lot of him. I was hoping I didn't make him too OOC~

Thank you! I'm really happy there was more figurative language ;o; I've been inactive as of recent, so I'll try to update as soon as I can!

I'm glad!

I haven't either....it makes me feel bad considering how insanely obsessed I am with hetalia, but I don't have the money ^^
No no no, he's totally in character, very impulsive and fun; though he is stealthy I'd say considering he is a vampire~

Okay! But yes, you improved very much! It's amazing you improved that quickly between chapter actually, so I commend you!

C:

Yeah...if Hetalia stuff (in general, not just Merchandise) weren't so expensive my room would be filled with all sorts of stuff. But alas, I'm a cheap spender and Anime merch is expensive, so I'll have to do without =^=
Oh good! I'm glad he's not OOC c:

Thank you! I hope to improve even more throughout my writing career!

Yeah! Highfive!

I mean this morning I woke up at siix but then fell asleep until almost nine. It made me super mad because that's usually when I can write the best because my sister isn't home to distract me >:/
