    Chapter One- An unorthodox encounter

You were staring up at the dragon, your wide, terrified eyes meeting its blue ones. (Friend) shot a look at you as you unsheathed your sword, ready to fight the dragon. You stood up, getting into a battle position. (Friend) Stood up as well, unsheathing their sword to help protect you. You stood your ground as the great beast took a step toward you, rumbling the ground as it did so. It was indeed beautiful; It was mainly white with a red underbelly and a blue streak starting from its nose to its tail. For a few moments, your faith in yourself faltered, and you considered telling (Friend) to run. The dragon got closer and closer. It raised its head like it was going to attack, and you braced yourself for the deafening roar that was eminent. Time seemed to stop, and all you could hear was the sound of your heart, your slightly heavy breaths, and the breeze. Suddenly, the dragon lowered its neck, crouching down so it's head was level with yours, and started...wagging its tail? You were utterly confused and you just stared at the dragon. It looked like a puppy wanting to play. Although it wasn't a HUGE dragon, it was certainly large enough to take on dozens of knights easily. That's what made the whole sight bizarre. You were still gaping as the dragon opened its mouth.

"Woah! Dude! A human! I've never seen one so close before! What's that in your hand? It looks like a stick! Is it a stick? Oh! Do you have a dog? Are you playing fetch? I love dogs AND fetch! I wanna play fetch to! Please let me play fetch!" It blabbered. If its actions were confusing, the words that were coming out of its mouth were three times as bad! (Friend) looked just as lost as you. You turned back to the once-majestic dragon. "Hey! I didn't introduce myself to you yet! Woops!" The dragon apologized loudly. You huffed, but the dragon was so loud no one heard you. "I'm Alfred! What's your name?" You had had enough of this strange dragons’ antics, so you pointed your sword at its nose, holding it only a hair away from the spot you knew was one of a dragons soft spots. Dragons were much like any animal as far as some basic things went. The nose and belly were their vulnerable points and were easy to hurt. 'Alfred' blinked, widening his eyes nervously. "H-hey! I'm not going to hurt you! I promise! Don't hurt me! Please!" You inwardly smirked at his cowardly attitude, and lowered your sword. Maybe if I act like I've fought dragons before, he'll shut up. You thought. "Alright, Alfred, I won't hurt you. But if you try anything I won't hesitate to use this." You raised your sword and tried to make it glint in the sunlight that filtered through the canopy of leaves. Alfred looked impressed as he studied it with round eyes. "What is it?" He asked. "It's a sword. People like me use it to fight since we don't have claws or fangs." You explained. Alfred's large head moved up and down in a nod. "Wow...cool!" He pulled his lips back into a smile, his sharp white fangs making you inwardly jump. "By the way, I never caught your name."

"That's because I never gave it to you." You replied, a little sharply. "I'm (Name) and this is (Friend)." You introduced. Alfred smiled wider,     "Nice to meetcha!" He flicked his tail happily. "Anyway, what are you doing out here in the forest?" He asked. You felt your face heat up, but you were able to stop from blushing from pressure. You couldn't say you were trying to catch him in an attempt to kill him. So you made up a lie, "We were hunting. We haven't eaten much as of recent." (Friend) looked a bit surprised at how easily you lied, but they didn't say anything. Alfred let out a small gasp. "Hey! I'm hungry to!" You flinched, but he didn't notice, "Can I help you? Pleeease?" He begged. You were about to say yes, when (Friend) grabbed your shoulder, "Hey (Name). I need to talk to you privately." They whispered. You looked at Alfred, then back to (Friend) and nodded. "Oh, ok." You turned to Alfred, "Can you give us a minute? (Friend) needs to tell me something." Alfred nodded happily and watched as you two scurried off into some nearby bushes.

"(Name), I don't trust Alfred. He is a dragon after all. You know how clever they can be. He might just be pretending to be weak. Don't agree to let him come with us. If we do happen to kill anything, he'll probably just take it all and fly off." You blinked, looking into their (color) eyes. Peeking over the bush, you saw Alfred drawing circles in the dirt with a claw, looking bored and lonely. "I trust him. Hungry dragons won't go through the effort of being nice to trick their prey. Besides, he could have easily killed us when he snuck up on us from behind, right? I say we let him come with us." (Friend) looked down. "(Name), you know how I hate dragons. They scare me and I wasn't planning on actually fighting any. I thought you were just overly ambitious when you said you wanted to fight dragons. Please don't make me go through with this." There was a pause, "I'm sorry...I just...I feel like I've done a lot for you but not enough for myself. If you want me to stay, I-I can." You frowned. (Friend) was confusing you. "If you want to leave, I'm not holding you back." You said simply. (Friend)'s eyes were brimmed with tears. "I'm a horrible friend. I'm sorry." You shook your head, "Don't apologize. You've been through a lot because of me. I don't expect you to want to do everything I do." (Friend) looked up, a small smile on their face. "R-really?" You nodded, but then made a small frown, "Do you have anywhere to go? I can't let you be homeless." (Friend) nodded, "Actually...I met someone from the last village we visited. You know, the one I always talked about? They said I could stay with them if I ever needed to." You nodded in recognition. "Oh yes, that nice person who you like." (Friend) nodded and stood up, giving you a hug.

"Best of luck on your journey, (Name). Please don't do anything stupid. I'll miss you even though I'm leaving you." They said as they started to head back to town. You waved goodbye and returned to Alfred, who was now scratching something into the bark of an oak tree. It looked like letters. 'H'...'E'...'R'...'O'...

"Hi (name)! Where's (Friend)?" He asked as he saw you walking back to him. You looked down at your feet, "They needed to return to their home. They missed their 'special someone' too much." Alfred seemed to understand and he nodded happily. "What about you? Do you need to go back to your 'special someone'?" You shook your head, "N-no...I don't have one." You said sadly. Alfred smiled sympathetically, "Well, if it helps, I don't have one either! We can be single together!" You smiled a little. Alfred stretched, letting out a huge yawn. "Well, are we going to go hunting or what? I'm starving!" You nodded and turned to head deeper into the forest. You felt something nudge your shoulder, and you turned to see Alfred right behind you. "It's hard to find deer in the forest." He lowered his head, "Hop on, I can fly and spot deer from the air better than peering through dense bushes." You were hesitant. If you did hop on, you would be trusting him with your life. If he moved too fast you could slip and fall. Sure Alfred would be able to catch you, but what if he didn't? You weren't able to answer because you felt the dragon gently pick you up by the collar and set you on his back. He unfolded his wings and found an open spot in the forest, powerfully taking off with a few beats of his wings. You gasped loudly and clutched onto his neck fur, thankful he had that instead of sharp spikes along his spine. Alfred had gone against everything you knew about dragons, not only personality-wise, but physically too. For one; his scales. They were red, white, and blue. Usually dragons were a solid dull color like grey or brown. Secondly, his spine fur. Sure some mountain dwelling dragons probably have fur to keep themselves warm, but it wasn't all that cold where you were. Still, he had soft blue fur starting from his head to his tail, where a small spade sat attached to his tail tip.

You leaned in close as you felt air rush past you, holding on tightly. Alfred laughed, "First time off the ground?" He asked, his loud voice easy to hear over the wind. You tried to answer, but you were too scared. Alfred looked down on the landscape once he reached a good height. "Hey, you have to look to! I can't do all the work!" Alfred encouraged. You mumbled an 'Ok' and turned your head to look down. Waaaaay down. You were so far up that the clouds seemed only an arms' reach away. You stared for a few seconds until you saw a few brown dots in an open field. "What's that?" You asked, pointing at what you saw. Alfred turned and narrowed his eyes. "Food!" he answered enthusiastically, turning sharply in mid-air, causing you to almost lose your grip. "Oh, sorry." He apologized as he slowed down a little. You sighed as he started his descent, the brown specks turning out to be a herd of deer. Thank goodness it wasn't a herd of cows. You didn't want to be responsible for leading a dragon to a person’s farm.

~Super short time skip~

Alfred set you and your catch down; you had to hold onto him for support until you regained full balance. Riding a dragon as it dove down to catch a running deer would make any first-timer dizzy. Alfred grinned, and then looked hungrily at the big buck he had caught. You knelt down beside the deer and took out a small dagger you had and started skinning it. Alfred watched with interest, "What are you doing?" He asked, focusing on the venison you were revealing. "I'm taking off its hide. This way I can turn it into clothes or maybe sell it. You can have the meat if you want-"

Thank goodness you were done skinning it. Alfred starting devouring the deer, his muzzle getting covered in blood. You cringed inwardly since you never thought he could just plunge his muzzle into a dead animal and chow down. He quickly ate his share- his share being everything but the bones- and licked the blood off his lips. (Do dragons even have lips?)

"Ahhh~ That hits the spot." He hummed happily. "Always go for the male deer, they taste better 'cuz they usually have more developed muscles." He said, flicking his tail. You nodded, even though you really weren't listening. After Alfred was finished, he stretched and looked at you, his bright blue eyes cheerful and content. "Hey, do you need to be going anywhere? Like (Friend)?" You shook your head, "No. I'm kind of...um... homeless. I just float around from town to town. I haven't settled down anywhere yet." Alfred frowned, "Where do you sleep at night?" You shrugged again, "Wherever seems safe. Usually at a cheap inn or I sneak into a brothel and sleep in the bedrooms. The women who work there never sleep there anyway."

Alfred looked depressed. "You shouldn't have to ever be unsure where you have to sleep." His face brightened as he got an idea, "Hey! You can stay with me! I have plenty of space at my place!" You were unsure at first, but if you could trust him for a whole day, you could trust him for a night to, right? You decided to agree. "Sure, I wouldn't mind. Where do you live?" Alfred beamed, "I'll show you!"

~Another short time skip of you flying w/ Alfred~

“Here we are! Excuse the emptiness of it. Dragons like me are too busy being a hero to furnish their cave.”

You looked around at the stone cave. You had flown most of the way, but had to walk to get inside. The cave was carved out of a hill that was close to the forest. It was actually kind of pretty, with the grass and moss covering most of the entrance. You had expected something flashier to be honest. Alfred walked inside, and you quickly followed. The word ‘Hero’ was engraved on one side of the cave. You felt a lot safer knowing he wanted to be the hero and not the villain.  Alfred was big, but he still fit comfortably in his home. It was huge! And it seemed to go fairly far back. You looked back outside, where the light was orange and dim. The sun was setting. You bumped into Alfred because you weren’t watching where you were going. Alfred blinked, smiling a little as you turned to him, embarrassed. “Well, unless you have something else you need me to help you with, I’m gonna hit the hay.” When he said ‘hit the hay’, he meant it literally. There was literally a huge pile of hay that served as his bed. He curled up, murmuring a quiet ‘goodnight’ before closing his eyes. He didn’t show you where to sleep, so you sat on the edge of the hay and used the deer hide you had skinned earlier as a sort of mat. You laid down, sighing softly as you tried to fall asleep.
You couldn't for the life of you and you thought you were going to stay up all night until you felt something wrap around your waist. You felt the cool smooth scales touch your skin, making you jump. Alfred pulled you close to him using his tail, and you felt your face heat up as you realized his tail stayed like that, wrapped around your waist and touching your skin directly. This made you a bit uncomfortable at first, since it was similar to having someone wrap their arms around you but under your shirt- which you were not used to- but at the same time you felt comfy. You let him stay like that for the rest of the night.

~Alfred’s POV~

(Name) looked lonely as I pretended to be asleep. I was such an idiot I forgot to tell her where to sleep! I actually didn't know anywhere in particular that she could sleep…except…no…she would never want to sleep right next to me, would she? It was worth a shot. I slowly moved my tail toward her, trying my best to be quiet. I successfully managed to slip it under her, by her waist. I felt her jump, and I jumped a little as well. I felt something strange…was that…skin? I had only felt scales before. It was so soft…and warm. I accidentally let out a small purr as I held my tail like that for a few moments. I quickly remembered that I had a reason for doing this. I lifted her a little ways off the ground and carried her over to my shoulder, where I set her down. I was about to move my tail, but something about the soft warm feeling of skin made me keep it there. (Name) didn't seem to mind. I smiled a little as I let myself fall asleep to this great feeling of external warmth.

~Time skip, 2nd POV~

You awoke slowly to the sound of Alfred yawning. His tail was still wrapped around you. You tapped it lightly to tell him you were awake. Alfred looked down and smiled tiredly at you, slowly moving his tail away from you. You stood up and stretched, yawning. Alfred stretched to, and stood up. “Good morning.” You mumbled kindly. Alfred replied with a deep rumble. “Mornin’. Anything planned for today?” You shook your head. Alfred grinned, “Good.” He picked you up by the collar again and set you on his back. “W-what are we doing?” You asked nervously. Alfred only smirked as he charged out of the cave and shot up into the air. You clutched on tightly. “Where are we going?!” You yelled over the wind.
“We’re going to the Valley of Gathering. Why do you ask?”
“The Valley of what?”
“I hope you’re ready to meet some dragons!”
“WHAT!?”
“Yeah! Uhh, dragons from all over the world will be there. I’m the best out of all of them, so don’t worry, everyone will love you!”
“Dragons from all over the world?”
“Yup! You know, Europe, Asia, North America…”
“I know the continents. I just don’t understand…”
“You will when we get there. Now, hang on!"
